Pocahontas and Me

I met a man who's full of charm, a man who could capture even the most playful heart and mind. He introduced me to Pocahontas. He said, he could remember me in her. This notion is not new to me. When I sing the song, "Colors of the Wind", I always hear people say, "that song suits you well". I do not understand what they meant by then. I am a curious person. So to satisfy my curiosity, I researched this princess's life. I've watched her movies produced by Disney (part I and II) and researched about her life story in the web.

Pocahontas, an Indian native who was strong, playful, loving and wise as what was characterized in the Disney movie. She fell in love with, John Smith,  an Englishman who loves exploring the seas and the lands across. This beautiful young princess loves the abundance of the Earth, its creatures and its people. The princess who believes in equality. She risked her life for John Smith, saving him from the punishment of her father, death. She loves him so much and he loved her, too. But Pocahontas needs to choose between need and want. She wants to be with Smith, but her people need her. Though it was tough, she let him go. Smith then sailed back to London. Another Englishman came in the order of King James, Mr. John Rofle. Unlike Smith, Rofle was a bit arrogant at first, he wasn't a gentleman when they first met. They both never expected that they would soon fall deeply in love with each other. Everybody thought that Smith was out of the picture, everybody including Pocahontas thought he was dead. It was difficult for her, but she decided to move on and leave what they had in the past behind. When Pocahontas was captured in London, Rofle and Smith rescued her. Just then, Smith was found to still be alive. Pocahontas didn't know what to react and what to do. Because both men she loves came to her rescue. Then the truth was revealed about Governor Ratcliffe's treachery and that Jamestown didn't have gold, Smith was rewarded a new boat by King James and Rofle became the King's adviser. To fulfill his dream, Smith asked Pocahontas to journey the world with him but she declined. She decided to go back to her people, and Rofle accompanied her. This is how Disney pictured her story.

I can see now how Pocahontas can be compared to me. We are alike, a bit stubborn, a girl who loves adventure, a girl like no other. We're not typical, we're unique. We both had our John Smith, a love story we both could not forget and barely could let go. And just like Pocahontas's John Smith, my John Smith loves the sea. But we both decided to be with our John Rofle. A descent man who's gentle and with great skills. Just like Pocahontas, I have decided to choose the need over the want. But I hope I will end up this story like hers, a happy ever after.
